CLUBFACE GOLF: The Chip Shot/The Short Game

The most popular golf swings are often a golfer's initial drive or putt on the green. Though important there are other golf swings that should demand a golfer's attention and practice. The short game, particularly the chip shot is an important element of golf. Improving your chip shot will improve your golf score. Even the PGA pros miss the greens on some shots, but they understand that having a solid chip shot can save a round. Mastering the chip shot will help you keep the momentum of a good round, even when you miss the green.

Golf Chip Shot Techniques:

  1. Setup: Narrow and open your stance so that your feet, knees, hips and shoulders are aligned 15 - 20 degrees left of your target. Keeping your feet close together (no more than 6 – 8 inches apart) helps minimize weight shift and body movement and the open stance will give you a good look at the target.
  2. Grip: Take your normal grip although choking down an inch or so is often very beneficial as shortening the distance between your hands and the clubhead enhances feel. With practice you’ll find the style that works best for you.
  3. Ball Position: As you address the ball, put it towards the back of your stance, and towards your right foot.
  4. Balance: Shift your weight to your left side so that you will get a nice, solid downward strike on the ball. About 70% of your weight should be in your left hip, with only 30% on your right side.
  5. Club Position: The butt end of your golf club should be aimed at your left hipbone, so that your hands are in front of the golf ball.
  6. The Swing: As you swing keep your hands ahead of the ball and strike downwards with a crisp motion. It’s essential to keep your hands ahead of the ball through impact to avoid flicking or scooping at the ball.

The keys to a successful chip shot lay in the setup of the actual swing. You have to prepare yourself differently for a chip shot than you do for any other golf swing. The actual chipping motion is quite easy; setting yourself up for the shot is what you have to remember to pay attention to. Walk through these tips and make time to practice on the chipping green. Perfecting a chip shot can be the key to a lower golf score on your next round!
