CLUBFACE GOLF: THE DRAW & FADE - DIRECTING THE GOLF BALL

Learning to maintain a square clubface throughout their entire golf swing is critical to golfers improving their golf game. Once they have mastered the square clubface technique taught by ClubFace Golf, other fundamentals can improve dramatically. By ingraining how to keep their clubface square they will swing on a proper path, at the correct angle of attack and arrive at impact with power and precision. Once any golfer learns to swing with a square clubface, they will have no need to make swing adjustments, and there will be no hesitation in their rhythm and speed. Their golf swing will improve simply because a square clubface position is the best and most repeatable position to play from. Then, with only minor adjustments they can begin to truly take control of their game by learning to work the golf ball right to left or left to right at will. At this point, golf will truly be fun.

The Draw: Working the Golf Ball Right to Left

The draw (moving the golf ball right to left for a right-handed golfer) is achieved by simply closing the clubface slightly at impact. This is a simple maneuver once a golfer has learned how to swing with a square clubface. Start by aligning your body in the direction you want the shot to start, perform your natural backswing and come down into the proper approach position. From a strong, square approach position, simply rotate the back of your left hand, wrist and forearm a little more aggressively towards the ground through impact. This extra bit of rotation with your left forearm and hand rotates the clubface in a counter clockwise direction which closes your golf clubface. The greater the rotation, the greater the movement of the golf ball from right to left. There is no need for major swing changes to accomplish this, only minor adjustments.

The Golf Fade: Directing the Golf Ball Left to Right

As with the draw, the fade (moving the golf ball left to right for a right-handed golfer) requires only a minor adjustment once a golfer has learned to swing with a square clubface. To achieve a fade, hold your golf club so that your clubface is slightly open at impact which will impart a left to right spin on your golf ball. Again, align yourself where you want your shot to begin, execute your natural backswing and downswing, and get into a proper and square approach position. Once there, rotate the back of your left hand, wrist and forearm towards the sky through the impact area. This golf technique will rotate the clubface in a clockwise direction, which holds the clubface open as you strike the ball. The more you hold the clubface open at impact, the more you will move the ball left to right. The beauty of being a square clubface golfer is that it requires only slight adjustments to your swing to control the flight of your golf ball.

Directing the Golf Ball - Lesson Summary

Being able to draw or fade a golf ball on command is another reason why it is best to be a square clubface player. Once a golfer has mastered swinging with a square clubface, only minor adjustments must be made to do different things with the golf ball. Being able to hit a golf ball straight, left to right or right to left with consistency is much more difficult when a golfer’s clubface is extremely open or closed during their swing. When is golfer doesn’t swing with a square clubface it increases the degree of difficulty of directing the flight of a golf ball.

Remember: If you control the clubface, you control the ball.
