Seven Keys to Fixing Our Slice

Because the golf swing is a chain reaction of movements, there is a definite and precise order to fixing our slice correctly. Work through this process in the following order:
  1. Grip: make sure you have a correct, neutral grip.

  2. Ball position: make sure the ball position does not creep too far forward. It should be well within our left heel. Many times a ball position that is too far forward is a result of a weak grip.

  3. Alignment: make sure our body is parallel to the target line. Correct grip and ball position should help improve this.

  4. Shoulder and hip angles: Feel the right side of the body slightly lower that the left, meaning the right shoulder should be lower than the left and the right hip should be slightly lower than the left. If we have a correct grip, ball position and alignment, then the right side shouldn't get too high.

  5. Clubface: Learn to make swings with a square clubface throughout the entire golf swing. Do many repetitions without the ball until it is ingrained.

  6. Release: Practice rotating the back of the left hand in a counter clockwise manner through the hitting area. This is a feeling that most slicers have never felt.

  7. Path: Now we are fundamentally in a position to fix the path. The path is often times a result of all of the above factors. The path can only be completely correct if all of the above fundamentals are correct.

If you are a slicer, following this plan of attack will help you begin to see a straight ball flight. Become familiar and continuously work on these items. I can't stress enough how important it is to work through this in the correct order. Do not attempt to fix a slice by working on the release or the path first. A poor release and a poor path are almost always results of a poor clubface position in the backswing and the start of the downswing. We must have certain things in order before we can work on others. Remember, first work on the grip, followed by the ball position, alignment, and clubface position throughout the entire swing, release and then path.
