Hitting Golf Shots into the wind

CLUBFACE GOLF: Hitting Into the Wind

ClubFace Golf understands the differences and difficulties in many of the shots a golfer must master. Golfers must execute chip shots and flop shots, golf shots out of bunkers and from the side of a hill. All of your golf shots take on more of a challenge when they are heading directly into a strong wind. By working through a few key points from the team at ClubFace Golf, you can learn to handle the added pressures of hitting into the wind.

Hitting Into the Wind Golf Techniques

  1. The most important thing you need to remember when hitting into the wind is to try and keep the ball as low to the ground as possible. In flight, if your ball gets too high, the wind will knock it down and alter its course. Hitting the ball too high makes it difficult to control the golf ball and your shot.
  2. Take an extra club or two to reduce the amount of loft. For example, if you routinely utilize your 7 iron when you need to hit 150 yards, we recommend you use a 6 iron or a 5 iron to cover that distance when you are hitting into the wind. You may even need to take more club and use your 4 iron or 3 iron when the wind is exceptionally strong. Don’t let your ego get in the way; using extra club is critically important.
  3. When hitting into the wind, the natural tendency is to swing harder, but in reality you must slow down your swing speed. Slowing down your swing will let you keep the ball lower to the ground and this will minimize the wind’s influence on the shot.
  4. Also, at address, move your golf ball back a few inches in your stance. You should feel like your hands are well ahead of the golf ball at impact. This will decrease the loft of the club and this will help keep the ball low and under the wind.

Don't be intimidated when facing a golf shot into a strong wind. Work through the process and stay positive. It is important to view these shots as challenging and exciting rather than how difficult they seem. Controlling your golf game when hitting into the wind can be a challenge. Learning how to keep your ball low is the most effective way to handle the wind. Simply remember to take more club, slow down your swing, move the ball back in your stance, and keep your hands ahead at impact.

Unpredictable weather is a challenge all golfers will inevitably face, and wind can be the most challenging of the elements. Golf is a game that takes patience, persistence and skill. Think positively the next time you're faced with hitting into the wind and practice the techniques we've outlined in this golf lesson.
