CLUBFACE GOLF: Achieving a Square Clubface
Clubface Golf has a golf improvement philosophy that is centered on the position of the clubface throughout the entire golf swing. We feel that the position of the clubface is the single most important golf fundamental there is. The position of your clubface affects every other major golf swing fundamental. It is the glue that holds your golf swing together. When you swing your golf club with a square clubface, you naturally improve the path in which the club head meets the ball, the angle that you approach the ball, your ability to establish a great impact position, your acceleration through the shot and your overall rhythm.
Dave Wesley, co-founder of ClubFace Golf and a golf teaching professional, has been studying the golf swings of the games' greatest players for the past 30 years. He explains his insight into the importance of a square clubface: "In all my years of teaching, I’ve found that a great majority of students don’t have a basic understanding of what a square clubface is at each point in the golf swing. This must be the first step in becoming a square clubface player and a clean striker of the golf ball." With this in mind, let’s work through the different check points in the golf swing as the ClubFace Golf team describes what a square clubface is at each point.
Address: When you address the golf ball, a square clubface will occur when the leading edge of the clubface is perpendicular to the target line.
Halfway back position: When your golf club is halfway back in the backswing, your club should be parallel to the ground and the toe of your club should be pointing straight up towards the sky.
Top of the backswing: When your golf club is at the top of the backswing, your left forearm, wrist and the back of your left hand should form one solid line (your left wrist should not be cupped or bowed). At this point the clubface should be parallel to your left forearm arm and at a 45 degree angle to the ground.
Halfway down position: When your golf club returns to the halfway down position your golf club will again be parallel to the ground and the toe of your golf club should once again point straight up to the sky.
Impact: At impact, the leading edge of your clubface should be perpendicular to the target line. This will be the same clubface position as at address.
Halfway through position: When your golf club is at the halfway through position and your club is parallel to the ground, the toe of your golf club should once again be pointing straight up to the sky.
Finish: As you finish your golf swing, you clubface should once again be at a 45 degree angle.
Dave Wesley and the rest of the ClubFace Golf team recommend trying to work these clubface positions into your golf swing on a consistent basis. Practice at home for a few days then practice them at the driving range. You might also find it helpful to practice these clubface positions in front of a mirror so that you are able to see them as you are performing them. As you become a square clubface player, a lot of good things will happen to your golf swing and your strike of the ball. And most of all, your enjoyment of the game will skyrocket.
