Square Clubface

CLUBFACE GOLF: Square Clubface Golf Swing Tips

To the team at ClubFace Golf, the most important golf lesson we can teach is this:
Successful golf swings are dependent on a square clubface. Control the clubface and you control the ball.

Simple and straightforward, we believe that a square clubface is the key to a successful golf swing. We know that in order to hit the ball straight, we need to have a square clubface when we strike the ball. But the lesson needs to go deeper than that. In reality, we need to have a square clubface position throughout the entire golf swing, not just at impact. The more square the clubface is throughout the golf swing, the more the other golf swing fundamentals can work correctly and easily, and the less adjustments and compensations we will need to make. As a golfer, when you learn to execute a swing in which the clubface is square throughout the entire swing, most of the problems you've had because of your golf swing will disappear.

Most golfers think that swing flaws are the cause of bad shots. But we disagree! At ClubFace Golf we've come to realize that swing flaws are more often a result, not a cause. Swing flaws are what save our bad golf shots from being really bad golf shots. A clubface that is in an excessively open or closed position throughout the golf swing is often the real culprit. When you begin your golf swing with the clubface out of position, you have to make adjustments just to put some part of the club on the ball. Your swing flaws are the result of poor clubface positioning.

When your clubface gets in a position that is very open or closed, the fundamental movements of your golf swing will not work effectively. When this happens, golfers are forced to make compensatory moves. These moves may include swinging over-the-top, casting or scooping, among others. These moves are added into the swing just to save the shot. Those movements are made as golfers attempt to square up a clubface which is too far out of position. It is virtually impossible to have a consistently clean strike of the ball from these poor clubface positions. A poor clubface position affects all of your golf swing fundamentals negatively.

When the position of your clubface is correct, the path the club is traveling on, the angle on which the club approaches the ball and our ability to get into a great impact position all improve. When your clubface is square with a correct path, the golf club can be accelerated through the hitting area with no hesitation or hiccups. The overall rhythm of your golf swing improves. You will find your true natural rhythm when there are no compensations needed in your golf swing. Simply put, maintaining a square clubface throughout the entire golf swing improves the other vital fundamentals.

Unfortunately, the reverse is also true. When you swing a golf club with a clubface position which is too open or too closed, it intrinsically hurts the path the club is swung on, the angle of the club's approach changes dramatically and we are unable to reach a solid impact. When any one of these are off, we have no chance for real acceleration through the ball and the overall rhythm of our swing never fully develops. Here, the single fundamental of a poor clubface position affected the rest of a golf swing.

Understanding the importance of a square clubface is vital in improving your golf game. Respect the process and practice your techniques until you are able to consistently play with a square clubface. Remember, if you control the clubface, you control the ball!
